                                                                                                  Gräfelfing, 1 February 2012

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I’m very glad to inform you that after 30 years the work on the edition of all works and arrangements of Theobald Böhm (flautist, composer, flute maker, inventor of the Böhmflute, 1794–1881) for flute and piano or orchestra is now finished.

The idea for a scientific as well as a practical complete edition in separate editions, which reproduces the sources as original as possible, was born in 1981 during the course of an exhibition in the Munich Municipal Museum on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Theobald Böhm’s death. In the same year, I sent a letter of research to 600 libraries and 600 musical instrument collections in 60 countries in order to find his compositions and flutes scattered to the four winds. In the following years, I undertook several research trips to the most important libraries and museums. The libraries in Munich, Berlin, Paris, London and Washington brought the best results. In 1988, the collection of the material was more or less finished and my collection had grown to about 500 manuscripts and prints with about 10 000 pages. Beside this, I own today about 70 CDs with one or several works of Theobald Böhm.

The musicologist Michael Nowotny from Munich, who works today as a producer of printed music with the Henle music publisher in Munich, began in 1988 with the production of the new edition on the computer. In the same year, the musicologist Dr. Raymond Meylan from Basel, Switzerland, who had written a book about the flute, could be won as co-editor. His work was to compare the different sources, to correct the mistakes and to look for the best solution, if the sources differed from one another. The report of his correction is in the appendix. I wrote a preface for each work and arrangement in German, English and French with information about the manuscripts, first editions, new editions, performances and the dedication.

Now I ask you to inform me, whether you want to order all the 37 works and 54 arrangements or only a part of them. All pieces will be printed in March/April 2012 and then sent away.

Kind regards,

great-great-grandson of Theobald Böhm
